nexTunes is an iPhone + PC/Mac application that allows you to choose the media you want on your iPhone without having to sit at the computer to do so.

What, and Why?

Most of us have more music, movies, audio books, and TV shows on our computer than can possibly fit on our iPhone. As such, we have to choose what to put on there, and manage it when we are home, next to our computer. But this can be a pain! You have to:

  • Connect the iPhone to your computer
  • Choose different combinations of media items in iTunes, dragging them to specific playlists that the iPhone synchronizes
  • Attempt a synchronization, and invariably get a message that your new list of media won't fit
  • Repeat the process

In addition, has the following every happened to you?

  • You hear a song on the radio that you own, and think "Hey, I should put that on my phone!" only to forget about it by the time you get home to synchronize?
  • You aren't at your computer, you are thinking about things you want to maybe have on your phone later, but you can't remember what those items are, and you can't even think of what you might like because your library is so large?

With nexTunes, an index of all your iTunes media is held in a database, and you can browse through your library, selecting media that you would like to consume, and delete media you no longer want. You can do this where you are, without being connected to your PC. You can see just how much space your phone has for media, so you know whether or not the thing you want to listen to or watch will fit. When you get home (or wherever your media PC/Mac are), a simple push of a button sends this information back to your PC, where it updates iTunes, making it ready for your new media. Simply connecting your phone to the PC will now update your phone with all this new information.

Easy peezy, right?

No more jotting notes, or forcing yourself to remember what you wanted to put on your iPhone before you forget. No more sitting in front of your computer thinking about what to put on your phone next. Nor more rushing to put newer songs or videos onto your phone before heading out for a workout or a trip.

nexTunes... Update your phone... from your phone!

How it Works

nexTunes contains two parts. A Windows/Mac application, and an iPhone application. The Windows/Mac application runs silently in the background, monitoring iTunes, and builds an index of all your media. It listens on your network for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that are running nexTunes.

The iPhone application, (available from the App Store), looks for PCs running the Windows/Mac app, and can request the index. When a connection is made, the index of media on your PC/Mac is sent to the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. At this point, your iPhone has all the information of your iTunes library. You can select tracks from within the iPhone app, and then with a press of a button, transmit back to the PC/Mac the items you want on this phone. The iPhone app will let you know whether the items you want on the phone will fit or not, so you will always know that you have room.

When the new list is pushed from the phone to your PC/Mac, the PC/Mac application updates iTunes, creating a playlist called "nexTunes" within iTunes, that contains all your selections. Simply connect your phone to iTunes, and enable the device (from within iTunes) to synchronize items from the nexTunes playlist, and wa-la, you will be synchronized.
